Jazzing Up an Alphabet Strip {Classroom Design Photos, Set Up Pictures & Ideas, Organization & Management}

At the start of the new school year we will start adding things like math vocabulary cards, word wall words and other resources to the blank slate of the classroom following mini-lessons. In addition to the time telling helpers displayed around the clock, I also put up an alphabet strip that shows all the letters written in cursive. We don’t teach cursive for awhile, but as third graders the kids come in on the first day of school super-giddy about the idea of learning cursive because in their minds that is what third graders do. Having the cursive alphabet on the wall affirms that they are big kids and makes them excited for the new year.

I typically buy an alphabet strip from the store, but like to jazz it up a bit so it complements the color scheme in my classroom. One of the tips I share in The Clutter-Free Guide to Classroom Decor is to add borders around posters and charts to give them a more finished look and demonstrate attention to detail. In this case I used a yellow chevron bulletin board trim around the perimeter of the strip. It’s just a small touch, but it also helps to fill the large space above the board that can look otherwise bare.
