Tip # 6 Inventory Your Classroom

If you are just joining us, you'll want to start here or check out my Clutter-Free Guide to Organizing and Managing Your Classroom.

TIP # 6: Inventory the items you have decided to keep.

Inventory the items that remain.

I realize this seems like it might be a bit overboard, but hear me out. Creating an inventory will allow you to best select storage containers when you get to that step. The other reason to do this is so that you will have an inventory of your classroom items in the event of a fire, flood or other disaster. Should anything happen to your classroom, you will need this for insurance purposes. Make a copy of the list for your files (leave at home) and a copy that you can take with you when you are looking for storage containers (which we'll talk about soon).

How is your decluttering going? Have you been able to part with anything that you originally thought you should keep?

  1. Great idea! I never thought of this inventory, but I can imagine how helpful it would be. Wish I had done that on my workday! :)

  3. I love this idea! I think it would even be great to do at the end of the school year before going home for the summer.

  4. Ok, this is a great idea. I do do this every August, so I know where I want to put things and I can check them off my list. My problem? I have not had a stinking minute to get rid of some clutter.

When do you usually declutter, during your plan, before or after school? Do you go in on the weekends? I am having a hard time. Maybe I will get a break soon.

  5. Holy cow! I just got home an hour ago because I was decluttering and reorganizing my classroom like a mad woman (almost 5 hours)! I feel so accomplished, but I still have a lot more to do! Love the inventory idea, too. :)
