The Great Divide

I went to Target last night.

The motive was to get more sunscreen and bugspray.

We've been out of school for only a week. I'm not even sure the ink is dry on the report cards. Yet, there was a big sign reading "School Supplies This Way."

WHAT?

I feel cheated. School supplies make me weak in the knees. I swoon like a 13 year old girl when she sees Justin Bieber when I see bins of Crayola and Sharpies. However, it felt like it took so long to get this summer thing going on that I found myself annoyed by the display. I was torn.

This picture is so symbolic. To the left we have the lunchboxes just waiting to be filled with snack packs and PB&J and on the right you'll find the Boogie Boards and water toys.
I'm leaning towards the right. Granted we don't go back until after Labor Day. How about you? Leave a comment and let us know when you officially go back and when you unofficially start setting up an planning. Be sure to let us know the general area in which you live.

  2. I do agree! I love the pace of my life right now but I just love school supplies too... Yikes what is wrong I was already stalking big lots for folders and zipper pouches. I'm going to justify by saying starting early makes me feel more prepared. That picture is great!

  4. As much as I look forward to the school supplies coming out, it's a reminder that my vacation is passing quickly! We got out on May 27th and we start with kids on Aug. 10. Not a long time away. My daughter starts on Aug. 8. Scary how fast it comes up! Enjoy your time off! I feel summer just started, yet it's half over! :(

  5. In my Ohio district, we start back on Aug. 22. I like to go in the first week of Aug to start setting up, then I can try to relax those last weeks before school! I'm always doing something at home to get ready!
I LOVE new supplies too! Ahhh...the smell of new crayons...

  6. I'm in Alabama and we get out the week before Memorial Day. Our students' first day is Aug 15th. That's actually late for us this year. I was surprised that you guys went well into June before you were out.

I LOVE school supplies too! My mom (jokingly) told me that was the only reason I became a teacher was so I could be in charge of all of the school supplies. I get excited when I see the school supply aisles come up. Guess I need to make a trip to Target. :-)

  12. Isn't that feeling gross? As much as I adore school supplies, summer is still summer and I want to see swim stuff! I live in south central Texas and our first day is Aug. 17, a Wednesday, thank goodness!

  13. It's definitely a torn kind of feeling. 'LOVE school supplies, but it just reminds me that my summer is coming to a close. Our PD begins the 10th of August, and kids come back the 17th. (I have a science conference these next two weeks as well). Phew! Time has flown by.

  15. I live in Michigan. My last day was June 10 and students start back the day after Labor Day. I've been in my room organizing/planning a lot this month because we are taking a long family vacation in late August. I won't be able to enjoy it unless everything is ready in my room before I go.

  16. I live in Washington state and we go back August 31st. It used to be after Labor Day but they moved it up (only we get out at the same time) Officially I have to report August 24th, but I'm always in the week before setting up my classroom and moving things around. I was in Target today also and my daughter asked to buy her lunch sack - I said "NO!" I'm not quite ready to think about school yet.

  17. Our first day with students is the day after Labor Day. Teachers officially report back on August 29. I usually try to get into my room at least the week before we have to (as we only get one day to "set up"). So this year I am hoping to be in my room by August 22.

I start really planning my space and things at the beginning of August usually.

  21. In my district (in southern Utah) we got out the Wednesday before Memorial Day weekend. This year teachers report back on August 10th. Sad to say, I was planning for next year on the very night of the last day of school this year! I tend to work in fits and starts; for example, yesterday I spent ALL DAY working on a SMARTBoard notebook for one of our math topics, but today I am just relaxing and hanging out with my niece. I will definitely be in my classroom at least a couple weeks before our report-back day, as I have a lot of organizing to do.

  24. I'm switching counties this year. My current school ended the first week of June and my new school goes back August 15th for teachers. :)
I'm excited because for the first year in 3 years I will be able to attend my sons Meet the teacher because he is still in the old county and their first school day is our first work day! yay!!!! an extra week of break. I was surprised the school supply stuff wasn't out July 1st. It's starting to get put out now here though. The $1 spot has LOTS of great deals though!!!!

  25. We go back on August 9th...the days are approaching... I am going up next week to begin setting up my class for the year. Last year I had a knee replacement and waited till the last minute to get it together, but this year I am planning ahead.

  26. I teach in Gilbert, Arizona. The first day back for teacher in service is August 4th. Kids come back on August 10th. I am already in my room working now ( a couple hours here and there, nothing crazy). However, each district in AZ does their own schedules. Chandler (a neighboring city) will go back the end of July!

  27. I live in Louisville, KY. Teacher's officially go back August 11th and the kids come back on the 15th (the following Monday).

Of course, from August 1st on, I will be in meetings, professional development sessions or setting up my room. We got out June 2nd (kids) and 3rd (teachers). Summer seems to get shorter and shorter every year!

I am teaching in a brand new school in Jacksonville, Florida this year, so we go back August 1st for orientation.....Kids don't arrive until the 23rd. I haven't been in a classroom for the past 3 years (stayed @ home with my babies!) so I don't mind the early start date.
Brand new school=clean slate! I will need LOTS of help from this site!

  30. Here in Greenville County, South Carolina, we start back officially on August 10th for in-service. Meet the Teacher is August 15th, and the kiddos come back August 17th! However, many teachers are planning to start unpacking their rooms this next week. (The school was painted so everything had to be taken down!)

  33. I'm in North Carolina. My first workday is Aug. 17. We can get back into the school on Aug. 15... I'll be there waiting for the school to be unlocked! This year, we have a nice chunk of workdays before the kids come (Aug. 25) which will be nice. I'm pretty excited about a 2 day week with the kids at the beginning. (The first days are always so exhausting!)

    Enjoy your summer! :)

We go back on August 15th. I'm always gathering ideas, but am not totally ready to get back into my classroom...give me a couple weeks and I'll be itching to get into my new classroom!

  36. It's crazy how many different schedules for school there are!!! I live in northern Florida. Our last day of school was June 9 and teachers go back August 15... students August 22. I am not letting myself go back into my room until the beginning August. Although I am teaching summer school, I'm trying to leave as much time away from school as possible. That's why I blog (I get my fix)!! :)

  37. I'm in Illinois! My school's last day was June 13 and our first day back will be August 16! The summer is short this year because a new school was being built at this time last year, which pushed back the first day of school until after Labor Day. We can officially go back into our classrooms on August 1st, but I asked my principal if I could come earlier and he said yes! :)

We have had so many budget cuts, pay cuts, etc. that our union fought for us and we do not officially report until August 9. AS IN THE DAY BEFORE THE KIDS COME. YEAH RIGHT! We are allowed back in our rooms on August 1 and I'm sure I'll be the first one there. :) :) :)
